Be OPEN & Flexible!

Be OPEN & Flexible to Children's interests!
Never be afraid to change from your plan. Oftentimes you will have an idea of what it is you want to teach and how you want to teach it. But you need to be willing to be flexible based on with the children are interested in. For example, one of my teachers took the children outside in order to have them look at a lake that had frozen over. Wonderful idea!! great lesson!!! . However on their way back inside the building, the children noticed a series of stepping stones laid out next to each other. She took that time to add another lesson on top of what she was already doing by having the children step up and down on the pavers. She had the children count the pavers, compare the pavers one with another, and ask questions about them, because some were circles, some were squares, some were brick, & some were stone. By being willing to let the children take some ownership of the lesson, she was able to teach a brand new lesson.
One key to making the most out of these "New Lessons" is to know is what the goals for learning are for the year for your children. In fact, my teacher knew that comparing and contrast was actually the next week's lessons goals. So this experience made a great introduction for what would happen next week.
So if you have a good understanding of what you're children are supposed to be learning throughout the entire year, then when these lessons that are spontaneous come up, you are able to come up with a spontaneous lesson plan, on point, according to the Children's own curiosity and interest. Now that is a win for everyone!!
